DIABETES FELLOWSHIP
Diabetology is a new and fast-growing specialty. The Southern Regional AHEC graduated its first Diabetes and Obesity Medicine Fellow in 2011. In 2023, the American College of Diabetology administered the first-ever board examination in Diabetology, and the first 21 Diplomates were recognized.
The SRAHEC Diabetes fellowship is a one-year fellowship designed for board-eligible or board-certified Family Physicians (preferred) or Internal Medicine physicians who are passionate about caring for patients with Diabetes and Obesity, and who wish to gain extensive knowledge and experience by managing very complex patients with these conditions.
As a Diabetes (and Obesity Medicine) Fellow you will have the opportunity to work closely with diabetologists, adult and pediatric endocrinologists, pharmacists, dietitians, psychologists, podiatrists, maternal-fetal specialists, and ophthalmologists. By working closely with members of this team, you will gain the necessary experience to become an expert diabetologist.
Become an expert in continuous glucose monitoring, insulin pumps, and closed-loop systems. Manage obesity with FDA approved therapeutics. Successfully run group diabetes visits. You will work collaboratively in a supportive environment with a diverse faculty and will have an opportunity to immediately apply what you have learned, while also teaching medical students, family medicine residents, and practitioners in the community.
